The island of Murano, just a short boat ride away from San Marco Square in Venice is known for its millefiore. The canes themselves create these small flowers and are made today in Murano very much like they were made in the 16th century.
From the canes, you can follow the creation of a millefiore pendant. The canes are chopped into small pieces to provide the "flowers" for the pendant.
Step 1: These small pieces are arranged in shapes and patterns.
Step 2: This pendant is placed into a furnace and heated to fuse the glass cane pieces into one solid piece of glass.
Step 3: The pendant is polished and carefully mounted.
Hold one up to the light and you will see a stain glass window appearance - jewels indeed.
Each of these steps, beginning with the forming of the canes in the glass furnaces on Murano, are done by hand so no two will ever be identical. Each one is special.
