Glass blowing on the island of Murano near Venice, Italy dates from around 600 AD. Legend has it that all the glass blowers were moved to the island of Murano from Venice after a disasterous fire in Venice. However, the real reason to move them was to prevent the secrets of making glass from the rest of the world. Leaving the island was considered treason.
